Your initial session will serve to begin building your relationship with your therapist. You will have the opportunity to provide background information as well as discuss your presenting concerns and reason for coming to therapy. In addition, this appointment will serve to verify accuracy of information and determine your personal treatment plan.
Every persons counseling experience is different. Therapy can be short-term, for a specific issue, or long-term, to deal with more difficult patterns or your desire for more personal development. Clients typically begin with weekly sessions and eventually taper to less frequent depending on their needs.
Clinical Social Workers do not prescribe medication. While medication is often necessary and helpful, it does not solve the issues behind your emotional issues. Therapy allows each person to focus on eliminating or overcoming the cause of their symptoms. If you currently see a psychiatrist or would like to begin seeing one in addition to your therapist, it would be beneficial for both professionals to practice an integrative approach in order to have a common treatment plan. Referrals for psychiatrist can be provided.
The relationship between a therapist and client is one the biggest predictors of therapeutic success. Your confidentiality is important to us and will be protected. Prior to your intake appointment, you will be given consent forms that include a copy of the privacy notices. (download privacy notices).
State law and professional ethics require therapists to maintain confidentiality except for the following situations:
* Suspected abuse or neglect of children, adults, and elders
* Disclosure or suspicion that the client is seriously in danger of harming him/herself
* Disclosure or suspicion that the client has threated to harm another person
Therapy serves as a safe space for each client to determine what is beneficial for their presenting issues. Therapist offer support, resources, coping skills, and an environment fostered in stimulating personal growth. There is no limit to why people choose therapy. Whether it is a new presenting issues or a long-term issue you would like to manage, therapy can be beneficial. One of the greatest benefits of therapy is simply learning to communicate.
